Caldeirão Dam and Reservoir

Located in the extreme northeast of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, the construction of the dam was completed in 1993, same year it started operating, serving mainly as a source of water supply and energy production. Housed in a valley where the Caldeirão River flows, the reservoir also receives the water diverted from the Mondego River, through a tunnel with an extension of approximately 2,500 metres and presents a of 66-hectare floodable surface at maximum storage capacity.

On the banks of the reservoir and the streams that flow into it, the aquatic and riverside vegetation is composed of reed beds, narrowleaf cattails, and ash tree groves. Regarding the surrounding area, the landscape is dominated by the common gorse, mixed woods of Pyrenean oaks, chestnut trees, and maritime pines, and in the areas further up, agricultural fields. This is a place with a landscape rich in fauna and flora that certainly deserves your visit. You will not be disappointed.
