Close to the village of Barriosa, located in a wide meander of the Alvoco stream, is the largest and best known of the manmade wells, the Barriosa manmade well (Poço da Broca da Barriosa). With a somewhat uncertain date, the diversion of the stream resulted in the formation of a vast and fertile agricultural area and the creation of a waterfall, constituting one of the most impressive waterfalls in Serra da Estrela. The present biodiversity is very relevant, highlighting the species of fauna characteristic of aquatic environments. Among the species observed, birds such as the gray heron, the kingfisher, the blackbird and, among the mammals, even the elusive otter are mentioned.
