Wolfram mines and Couto Mineiro do Malha Pão

On the slopes, surrounding the Mountain Village of Sazes da Beira, there are abundant traces of old wolfram and tin mines, explored from the beginning of the 20th century until the 1950s, as a result of the enormous demand for wolfram during that period. The mines occur associated with quartz veins installed in existing fractures in the shales, being formed by a network of underground galleries connected with each other and with the outside through chimneys, for the ventilation of the tunnels. The location of these galleries is easily identified by the existence of heaps of sterile materials rich in quartz. The entrance to any of these galleries can be discovered by taking the Wolfram route. Due to the risks that these tunnels represent, it is not recommended to visit them.
